In the 1940s or 1950s I remember them saying there were only 40 whooping cranes left. I heard in the 1980s there were over 200. Some of the effort to build their number involved putting them with sand hill crane populations.

There were fewer than 300 whooping cranes in the 21st century mainly due to habitat loss, hunting, and low reproductive rates. These factors have significantly impacted the population, making it difficult for them to recover and increase in numbers. Conservation efforts are in place to protect and increase the population of whooping cranes.

What is another name for the whooping bird crane?

I have read somewhere that the name Whooping Crane, meant "friend" or "ally" to the Native American Indians. I can't find any reference for this now though. The other meaning for the name, is a large wading bird, in fact the tallest in North America, a crane that makes a loud whooping sound and call. Therefore, the name Whooping Crane. There are now about 200 Whooping Cranes living in the wild, and just about 200 more in captivity. This is in part due to the success of conservation programs, and specifically the captive breeding, and reintroduction to the wild programs. For more details, please see the sites listed below.

Is it illegal to feed Florida's whooping cranes?

Don't know if it is, check local game warden; give them a call. Better yet, why not leave them alone and enjoy them. First of all, they've been around longer than you have; they survive. Second, have you seen the birds that hand around McDonald's and other eateries? See how scraggly and dry they look, wasted and gaunt? People feed them their french fries and other junk that is served. That's what that stuff does to your body. Why do it to the birds? Why mess with mother nature and do the same to whooping cranes? Leave them alone; they're doing fine.
