I researched this and the consensus is that their is no definite answer, not enough research exists. Most think it is due to removal of the animal too early from his parent. However, it seems more common in specific breeds (like my Dobie). A month after we were back together the behavior started back up again. I wouldn't be to concerned ... he shows no other strange behavior and seems happier with the family reunited.
