The hive isn't hexagonal, but a honeycomb cell is. Having the cells in a hexagonal pattern is the most economical use of space, giving the highest number of cells for a given area using the least amount of wax.

Actually, if you look closely, the cells are not quite hexagonal: the bees tend to round off the corners, so they are nearly circular.
