A single cat does not feel threatned so It does not bother to cover it up. If you have more than one cat the most aggressive or highst in the pecking order will not cover poop to show it is the Head Cat

Answer

A single indoor cat will gradually not cover its poo because there's no threatening enemy. If you have two or more indoor cats, it's mostly the boss cat that doesn't cover. But some other cats would also less frequently NOT cover, especially when the boss cat doesn't care. (like, if the boss cat loves playing with certain cat, that cat won't cover either). It's also because they don't have a mommy cat to show them (adopted too early) or haven't been exposed to outdoor environment that covering is absolutely essential.

If they seem to be "pawing" after doing their stuff and not cover their poo, it's not because they're dumb and pawed wrong area. It's because they're SMART, they are trying to "clean" their paws against walls and kitty litter box and get stuff off their paws onto the kitty litter... not because they were trying/missing to cover the poo -_- (they just had NO INTENTION to cover the poo)... If you try to teach them to cover their stuff again, they just won't learn, 'cause there's no need to cover. They'll just hate you for trying to make their paws imitate pawing on the "dirty"(in their minds) litterbox.

But when I adopted a new kitten, all of sudden they started covering. Maybe the "unknown" existence does frighten them to get their instincts to come back. ('cause new kitten's still in enclosed space, they can only smell him)

I've heard that if you own indoor AND semi-outdoor cats, the cats who experience the outdoors will actually go into the litterbox after the indoor cat even if he doesn't have any business there, and cover it for the indoor cat.

Some cats do not cover their waste after using the litter box for a variety of reasons. It could be due to stress, anxiety, feeling confident in their territory, or simply due to individual preferences. It's important to ensure that the litter box is clean and accessible to encourage proper litter box habits.

It is not recommended to train a cat to stop using the litter tray, as it is a natural behavior for them to use it for elimination. Avoid punishing your cat for using the litter box and make sure it is clean and easily accessible to encourage proper use. If your cat is consistently urinating or defecating outside the litter box, consult with a veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical issues.

Why cats go in litter?

Cats have a natural instinct to bury their waste as a way of marking their territory and avoiding detection by predators in the wild. Using a litter box satisfies this instinct by providing a designated area for them to eliminate that mimics the feeling of digging in soft soil.

Does a three day old kitten need a litter box?

No, a three day old kitten is far too young to control its own bowel movements. It needs its mother to help stimulate intestinal contractions through regular grooming. A kitten should have an accessible litter box starting at about 4 weeks of age, when it is starting to crawl around and explore its environment. However, most kittens are not routinely using the litter box until approximately 8 weeks of age, and sometimes later.
