Actually, it's quiet interesting. Birds lay eggs. Chickens are indeed birds. But chickens lay eggs not only for reproduction but as a hormonal process, remotely like that of a woman. A hen will lay eggs just as good without influence of a rooster. This is actually better because the eggs won't have a bloody yolk.

Chickens require light to stimulate their pituitary glands to release hormones that regulate their reproductive cycle. Adequate light exposure mimics the natural day-length patterns that trigger egg-laying behavior in chickens. Without sufficient light, chickens may reduce or stop laying eggs altogether.

Light of any kind will induce continuous egg production. Chickens need 14 hours of light to stimulate egg laying and a combination of natural daylight and artificial lighting will suffice. Free range hens get plenty during the summer months but in the other three seasons of the year, natural daylight is lacking and they must have light in the chicken coop. You do not need special bulbs, regular incandescent lighting of at least 60 watts will be sufficient.

Since chickens do not nourish themselves through photosynthesis, sunlight is not a necessity for their survival. Light, however, as it does in all animals, plays some role in their biological clocks, telling them when they should be asleep and when they should be awake.

Chickens need light to lay eggs due to the light stimulates the gland in their eyes to stimulate more egg laying.

Because it is how they reproduce.
