They just aren't as colorful because they don't need to impress the male birds. The male birds need to attract a female so they are colorful.
Way more complicated actually. The colour is an expression of good genes, as mentioned above. But why would a male bird be practically iridescent when the hen is well camouflaged? The theory is that if a male can survive as a "sore thumb" then he must have good genes and is suitable to mate with. Sexual selection. And males are part of the bottleneck that's in place to ensure the genetic fortitude of the species. We males are mere sperm donors in many species - females are the gate-keepers and life-bringers who in theory could all be serviced by just a few males.
Who says they are ugly anyway? Eye of the beholder.
There is a paradox here too - look up the Eclectus parrot
the mother finds a mate and after they take care of their business, a few or so weeks later the mother lays eggs which will, in a couple of weeks and mom's care, will hatch into baby ducklings
Male birds do not lay eggs. Only female birds have the ability to lay eggs.
Like all birds, they have two sexes, male and female.
