Modern evolutionary theories are still based off of Charles Darwin's theories of evolution published in 1859. They have yet been proven as scientifically inadequate or incorrect, nor have new, more plausible theories been created so Darwin's theories are still the basis for modern evolutionary science.

Evolutionary theory has been developing for hundreds of years. Many people have made major and minor contributions to the theory.

The idea that animals could descend from other animals is thought to have originally been proposed by pre-Socratic Greek philosophers, such as Anaximander and Empedocles. In 1751, Maupertuis wrote about changes occuring during sexual reproduction and the creation of new species by accumulating traits over many generations. Buffon and Erasmus Darwin both thought that species could descend from other species.

Lamarck was responsible for what was probably the first fully articulated evolutionary theory. Although many of his proposals have since been disproven, he made many important contributions to evolutionary theory.

Charles Darwin is most commonly regarded as the 'father of modern evolutionary theory'. His theory of evolution by natural selection, partly influenced by the work of Thomas Robert Malthus was published in his book, On the Origin of Species. Alfred Russel Wallace also developed a similar theory around the same time.
