Prior to the expedition, Lewis went to Philadelphia for intense training by physician Benjamin Rush, astronomer-surveyor Andrew Ellicott, botanist Benjamin Barton, anatomist Casper Wister, and mathematician Robert Patterson. For three months he was tutored in the spring of 1803. With Benjamin Rush he studied how to properly apply medicine, how to recognize a disease, etc. With Ellicott, he learned how to recognize direction using the positions of astrological bodies, how to calculate logitude, latitude and area, etc. With Barton, he learned how to recognize plants that could be edible, used for medicine, how categorize plants and how to recognize plants that were dangerous or poisonous. With Patterson, he learned how to measure depth, length, width, how to read a thermometer, etc.
in the 1960's our group went to a different one of bob mack's "under 21" dance clubs every week end. he had clubs in every suburb of pittsburgh and some in other cities. the out of town clubs all carried the same name of his first pittsburgh club (the white elephant). they all featured great dance music, most of which was unknown at the time. many of the biggest recording stars appeared at some of the pittsburgh clubs - we saw smokey robinson and the miracles, little anthony, the isley brothers and jr. walker and the all stars at the white elephant, bo diddley at the wildwood lodge, chuck berry at the blue fox, sly and the family stone at the lebanon lodge and sam and dave at the teen scene. mack had a team of great deejays that played at these clubs. sometimes you could not get in, they were so crowded. he always played at a huge club in the allegheny valley, called the tarena. the times we were there, the crowds were massive. the door crew said two thousand were in attendance. about 1962 mack went on the radio, playing the rare records from the dance clubs. the show was called mack's wax museum, and the records were called "monsters". every car radio had that show playing. people went nuts, when a new record came on. after a couple years, mack left the show. one of his best club deejays called mad mike took over, and continued the same format for many years. we all miss those days BOB MACK TO BE HONORED.. Posted by..Larry Patterson Mack to be honored Pittsburgh by Eric Legendary Pittsburgh DJ and dance promoter Bob Mack will be honored at the Harmar House in Cheswick on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Together with Porky Chedwick, Mad Mike Metrovich, and Terry Lee, Mack pioneered the playing of obscure, unknown records which became known as "Pittsburgh Oldies" more than 50 years ago. If you own an original Roulette pressing of "Hanky Panky" by Tommy James and the Shondells, the biggest record that broke out nationally out of the Pittsburgh dance scene, you'll see "Bob Mack presents" on the label. Mack is the one who found Tommy several years after "Hanky Panky" was originally issued and gave him his name and helped place the record with a national label.
