The better pet choice between guinea pigs and gerbils depends on your preferences. Guinea pigs are larger, social animals that require more space and tend to be calmer and less likely to bite. Gerbils, on the other hand, are smaller, more active creatures known for their burrowing behavior and are generally easier to care for. Choose based on the space you have, your activity level, and whether you prefer a more interactive pet or a more low-maintenance one.
Guinea pigs are smarter, cuter, and less violent than hamsters.
With good health, a guinea pig can live for up to eight years. Some things to consider, though:
Guinea pigs prefer to live in groups so you need to have two of them. Their cage has to be large enough for them to get exercise - usually about 1.5 to 2 square meters. Also they have specific dietary needs: lots of fresh water and a special kind of hay called timothy have to be available at all times or they can develop problems with their digestion or kidneys. Some commercial feeds still contain alfalfa although it's now known to cause gut problems. They also need to regularly have fresh vegetables like carrots, squash, etc. in limited amounts. Another thing to think about is that piggies require regular cleaning, usually two or three times a day. They tend to go to the bathroom wherever they are rather than using a specific place, and can develop foot sores if their flooring isn't kept clean and dry.
Guinea pigs DEFINITELY!! Especially for children, they are easier to hold and I have found them to be friendlier less nippy and easier to train.
Hamsters are nocturnal which means they don't normally come out much during the day whereas guinea pigs do meaning you have more time to train and handle them and less time being kept up at night with scurrying.
They are less easy to lose or manage to escape. Once they get used to being handled they will happily sit on your knee for hours on end whereas hamsters will scurry and climb everywhere. Guinea pigs if raised by hand from young and given attention, will eat out of your hand and learn to follow you in the garden- this takes years of attention and care, though this is something a hamster will never do
Guinea pigs can be kept outside during the summer months and will happily mow your lawn if kept in a pen. Best pets EVER!!!:)
In my opinion, as all answers to this question will be opinions, hamsters are much better pets than guinea pigs. Hamsters are known for being cute and fluffy as well as easy to take care of. They can be messy, but guinea pigs are known to bite children.
They are equally messy, but guinea pigs make a cute little noise when they are excited to see you or want attention. They seem to be smarter. Hamsters just look at you. I wouldn't recommend a hamster as a pet, but I would strongly recommend a guinea pig. Just please do the little guy a favor and clean his cage twice a week.
Well, like everyone else said, it is actually your choice, because it depends on your schedule, budget, knowledge, attention, age, responsibility, etc. Hamsters such as dwarfs to me make better pets due to the lack of potential illness, because if you need another one, wow, not very much for another. Guinea pigs can cost a pretty penny, depending on dealer, pr business, and the amount of food they can eat. Hamsters eat less, take cheaper food, and they do not need to be cleaned as often, cage and body wise. Also, housing is a great difference! 10 gallon tanks with a small hut and toy is good for hamsters, only costing about $10-$15. Big cages for guinea pigs cost $30-$70, depending on style, and brand. Hamsters need very little attention, on the other hand, guinea pigs by themselves need attention by being petted, held, and comforted.
It all depends on your opinion. But for me- I'd be rooting for the Guinea Pig. The reason why is because unlike hamsters, Guinea Pigs aren't as lazy, and they live longer also. Also unlike Hamsters, they live up to 5-8 years, but a Hamster just can live up to 2-4 years, it's because they're not as hygienic as a Guinea Pig. What else is, Guinea Pigs are lively - they aren't lazy as I said before. And lastly, Guinea Pigs don't stink- Hamsters have gas, which makes them and their cage REEK of their scent- gas and urine- yuck! There you are- a reason why Guinea Pigs are better than Hamsters.
Guinea pig is much bigger than a hamster. A hamster is small and moves around alot. A guniea pig is more bigger and it is a gentle pet. It stay's still and u can have fun and cuddle with it. So my opinion I think a guinea pig is better
Definitely guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are timid but when they finally warm up to you they are very sweet. Hamsters are evil vicious creatures. They bite and are nocturnal so you can't actually play with them. I once had hamsters. I came home one day and one of the hamsters had chewed the leg off of the other one. That is not the only ugly experience I have had with hamsters either. DO NOT BUY THEM IS YOU VALUE YOUR HEALTH!
i like guinea pigs better
Answer
They both make great and wonderful pets!!!!! I personally like Guinea Pigs better because they're easier to tame, train, and more playful. NOTE: Not too playful though. But depending on how much space you have. Guinea Pigs are better off with a friend. And they're big, so they need a big cage. Can you afford or do you have room for a big cage? Is your question. If you're not sure, buy a hamster to save space. A better gift to a child under 13: Guinea Pig.
Answer
Guinea pigs are not nocturnal, meaning you can play with them in the daytime. They smell bad and don't really bond all that well with owners.
Hamsters are nocturnal. They sleep in the daytime and wake up at around 10 pm at night to play/exercise. Hamsters bond great with their owners and can learn tricks.
Which ever sounds better to you is the better pet.
Answer
Both are great pets but only can decide witch ones are better. Guinea pigs are bigger need more room eat more food and make alot of noise. You need to trim a guinea pigs nails to. Hamsters are smaller and easier to care for but tend to bite and escape.
Answer
I would suggest a Guinea Pig because hamsters are nocturnal and they will bite if you wake them up to play.
Well, of course it has alot to do with personal opinion, but I prefer guinea pigs over gerbils, especially as pets to smaller children because guinea pigs are personable and friendly and need attention, and they are also large enough to cuddle, whereas gerbils are smaller and harder for kids to hug, and also not as friendly - they don't need attention as much and in my opinion aren't the best pets if you're looking for a pet that can also be your friend. I had guinea pigs for 5 1/2 years and enjoyed every minute of it! Guinea Pigs also live longer than gerbils.
Guinea pigs and gerbils typically have different temperaments and housing requirements, so it is not recommended to house them together. Guinea pigs are social animals that thrive in pairs or groups of their own kind, while gerbils are best kept with other gerbils for companionship. Mixing them could lead to stress, aggression, or injuries. It is best to provide each species with its own suitable living environment.
Gerbils and guinea pigs have different social behaviors and communication methods, which can make it challenging for them to get along. Gerbils are more active and territorial, while guinea pigs are social and laid-back. It is not recommended to house them together as they might not understand each other's behaviors, leading to stress and potential conflict. It's best to provide separate living spaces for gerbils and guinea pigs.
No, Pets Unlimited does not have guinea pigs. They primarily focus on dogs, cats, and small animals like hamsters and gerbils.
