Prehistoric cattle may have originated in India millons of years ago. By about 2,588,000 to 12,000 BP, the cows had migrated to Europe, North Africa, and other areas of Asia. Today's cows belong to two species, wild cattle from Europe, and the humbacked cattle from Asia.
Cattle originally came from Europe and Asia, as that is where their ancestors have originated from though millions of years of evolution. Domesticated cattle that we know today (especially those of the Bos taurus species) have their ancestral roots from wild cattle known as the Aurochs (Bos primigenius) and even possibly from the earlier-thriving Celtic Shorthorns (Bos longifrons). European cattle may have been first domesticated around 9500 B.C. By comparison, Bos indicus cattle, those humped cattle common to tropical countries that belong to the Zebu or Brahman group, have been probably first domesticated 5000 to 7000 years later, which would've been between 2100 and 4000 B.C.
As far as where they came from and how they got to North America, the answer to that would be that they were imported by ship in the 1500s by Columbus, and other imports were made subsequent to Columbus's second voyage to the New World by Cortez and immigrants to New England and Canada.
