The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja), sometimes known as the American Harpy Eagle, is a Neotropical species of eagle. It is the largest and most powerful raptor found in the Americas, and among the largest extant species of eagles in the world. It usually inhabits tropical lowland rainforests in the upper (emergent) canopy layer. Destruction of its natural habitat caused it to vanish from many parts of its former range and it is almost extinct in Central America.
It is not currently listed as "endangered" but actually as "near threatened" and has been since 2004.
BirdLife International 2008. Harpia harpyja. In: IUCN 2011. IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Version 2011.2.
