Rat snakes in the wild can be quite defensive, and even captive bred rat snakes will bite, although once they are used to humans this is normally because they can smell food on their hands and mistake them for prey. Rat snake bites are harmless, unless they become infected, of course - like a cat or dog bite.

They are usually about 4-6' long when full grown and will run unless you antagonize it then it will try to strike but it can't hurt you. It doesn't have fangs and is not poisonous. They constrict their food like a boa but for the most part if you leave it alone it will leave you alone

If the colors are arranged in bands around the snake then there are two possibilities: a coral snake or a milk snake. If red bands touch yellow bands then it is a coral snake. Coral snakes highly venomous and have been known to kill people. If red bands touch black bands then it is a milk snake, which is not venomous. Generally, though, you should not take the time to see which it is. If it has these colors, just stay away from it.
