Hares are leporids belonging to the Lepus genus and are closely related to Jackrabbits. There a many species of hare, such as, the European Brown Hare, the Snowshoe Hare, the Black tailed Jackrabbit and the White tailed Jackrabbit. They are all generally fast moving animals, the European Brown hare can run at speeds of about 45 mph (70 km/h). Hares like to live on their own and lead a solitary life style, although they can be found in pairs and do interact with other hares in their territory. They are relatively shy creatures, but during the spring months, their behaviour changes and they can be seen in daylight, chasing one another round meadow and fields. This is mainly a display of dominance and allows males to compete for breeding rights with the females. During the spring months, hares can be seen striking one another with their paws, an action that is referred to as "boxing". It was believed that this was also display of dominates and was chiefly a male activity, however, recent observations have shown this not to be the case. It is now thought that "boxing" is usually the female hitting the male and it is believed to be for one of two reasons: one, that she is not ready to mate and wishes to deter the male's interest, or two, to test the males determination of courtship. Either way, it was this "boxing" activity that lead to the creation of the expression "mad as a March hare", March being the time most hares start the boxing rituals.
