The Silurian period is a geological time period that lasted from about 443 to 419 million years ago. It is named after the Silures, a Celtic tribe in Wales. The Silurian period is known for the first appearances of land plants, jawed fish, and insects.
Mosses and other primitive plants grew over the land near the water's edge. They continued the work of the lichen by turning the rock into soil. There are a few fossils from the end of the Silurian Period that show us early insects lived among these mosses and made their own colonies. The soil made by the lichens grew strange plants called Cooksonia. These plants had stems, but no real leaves. Some Cooksonia had special tissues for carrying water and nutrients upward to the branching parts of the plant. This vascular tissue is common in modern plants, but was a first during the Silurian Period.
The Silurian was a time period 443 to 417 million years ago (mya). It was a time when the Earth underwent considerable changes that had important repercussions for the environment and life within it. The Silurian witnessed a relative stabilization of the earth's general climate, ending the previous pattern of erratic climatic fluctuations. One result of these changes was the melting of large glacial formations. This contributed to a substantial rise in the levels of the major seas. Coral reefs made their first appearance during this time, and the Silurian was also a remarkable time in the evolution of fishes. Not only does this time period mark the wide and rapid spread of jawless fish, but also the highly significant appearances of both the first known Freshwater Fish as well as the first fish with jaws. It is also at this time that our first good evidence of life on land is preserved, including relatives of Spiders and centipedes, and also the earliest fossils of vascular plants.

Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian Periods
The environment during the Silurian Period was characterized by warm temperatures, high sea levels, and diverse marine life, including the first appearance of jawed fish. In contrast, the environment today is cooler overall, with lower sea levels and a greater diversity of terrestrial life due to the presence of plants and animals that have evolved over millions of years.

Fossils of sharks have been found dating back to the Silurian period, more than 200 million years before the first dinosaurs.
The Silurian period followed the Ordovician period.
Primitive Fish,Trilobites,Orthocones and Horseshoe crabs lived in the silurian
Fossils from the Silurian Period are between 443.7 and 416 million years old.
The Silurian period spans from 443 to 419 million years ago. The earliest dinosaurs evolved 231 million years ago. That means there were no dinosaurs at all during the Silurian.
The Silurian period started off with a mass extinction of 60% of all marine life. During the Silurian bony fishes evolved setting the stage for the Devonian, which is referred to as the "Age of the Fish".
