An ant lion is called so because it hides in the sand or dirt. Than it digs down and waits for the ants to come through. When they do the ant lion pops out of the ground and feast on the ants.

An ant lion is another name for an antlion - any of various nocturnal insects from the family Myrmeleontidae, whose adults resemble damselflies, and whose larvae bury themselves under a cone-shaped pit in sand in order to trap insects such as ants.

An ant lion is named for its diet of ants and its resemblance to a lion due to its large jaws. It preys on ants by creating funnel-shaped traps in the sand and ambushing them when they fall inside.
