The greatest danger to a lion cub is to be killed by its father's rival, in an effort to bring all the lionesses back into estrus. But, any carnivores big enough to eat a cub will, most notably: hyenas, leopards and crocodiles. Also, if the cub dies while still very young, the mother will eat the body to make best use of the nutrition.

Potential predators of baby lions include hyenas, leopards, and other lions. These predators may target young lions as they are easier to catch and vulnerable when left unattended by the pride. Additionally, other large carnivores or opportunistic predators may also pose a threat to baby lions.
