Guinea pigs pee and poo is what tends to make the cage smell. So yes, it usually does tend to smell.
The odors that make the cage seem and look really dirty is usually the guinea pigs pee and poo.
So as long as you clean your cage minimum once a week you shouldn't have too many odor problems. I would recommend using CareFresh Ultra (or the original) bedding and/or Aspen ( used for Bedding and Litter) for the bottom of your cage.
The only reason a Guinea Pig would smell bad is that its owner is not doing their job and keeping it in hygienic conditions.
Guinea Pigs are very clean animals and will only smell if allowed to get dirty, kept in poor conditions or is unable to clean itself for some reason.
If you are keeping it clean, then something is wrong and you need to take him/her to visit a vet.
it depends
if the owner takes good care of the pet then the cage does not smell bad on the other hand if the cage is poorly taken care of then the cage will smell badly. you can but special bedding to decrease the smell of the cage. Guinea pigs tend to poo and pee in one place so cleaning that corner or place in the cage everyday and cleaning the cage two or three times a week then the cage will not be a problem
more info on guinea pigs
Guinea pigs need excessive care and grooming along with interaction with humans. the pet may bight and scratch if not taken care of well. guinea pigs like a clean cage so cleaning the cage often is up to you but it helps to clean it often. If you live in a small home or have the pet in a small area then it is optimal to clean the cage daily or every other day. On the other hand if the pet is in a big house or large area then cleaning can be done two to three times a week.
grooming advice
the pet will like to be brushed daily this also helps lower the filth that is in the hair witch lowers the smell of the animal decreasing the smell of the cage. Some animals tend to grow loooooong nails make sure the nails are clipped go to your local pet store or vet to get advice on clipping the nails. The nails must be clipped because the nails curve making them cut into the pets paws creating small cuts witch will eventually get infected leading to poor health of the pet.
cage cleaning advice
while cleaning the cage put your pet into one of those rolling balls things to keep the pet busy. use a spray to clean the bottom of the cage and the bars of the cage make SURE THAT THE CAGE CLEANER IS PET FRIENDLY OTHERWISE THIS CAN KILL THE PET. put in new bedding and new food and water clean off any dishes or plastic/metal toys this will make the pet happier to play with the toys.
good luck!!!
sincerly,
a hopefull pet owner
