Tigers are most definitely carnivores - even to the point that there really are man-eating tigers. Most other animals that acquire the reputation don't really deserve it, but tigers have been known to not only kill and eat humans when presented with an opportunity, but to stalk them as prey. Fortunately their main diet is not people but rather other animals in the jungles, forests, grasslands, swamps, and mountains that they inhabit. Most man-eating tigers are old and missing teeth, acquiring a taste for humans because of their inability to capture preferred prey.

Tigers mostly feed on larger and medium sized animals such as Asian species of deer, wild boar, and water buffalo in their habitat in India. Sometimes, they also prey on leopards, pythons, sloth bears and crocodiles. Further north their diet is more along the lines of Asian elk, wild boar, deer, and moose. Further south and east they eat the mid-sized animals indigenous to the Southeast Asian forests like wild boar, forest deer, and tapir. When tigers lived in the Caspian area, they preyed on antelope, camels, Caucasian wisent (a big animal that looked a lot like an American bison), yak, and wild horses. Although they usually go for the bigger animals (they are the biggest of the big cats of our time so they need a lot of food) they are opportunistic and will eat much smaller prey, such as monkeys, peafowl, hares, and fish. Occasionally they will also go for bigger prey like young elephant and rhino calves. Obviously they will also eat domestic animals such as dogs, pigs, sheep, cows, horses, and donkeys when they are available.
