Its illegal to own an owl in the U.S. without a rehabilitators license. Even if you live somewhere where it is legal to own an owl, why would you want to? They are hard to take care of and they smell and they are noisy. So many people in this world are stupid enough to say, "oh wow! Harry Potter has a pet owl! that's so cool im gonna get a pet owl too! ill keep it in a bird cage and feed it hamburger! itll be soooo cool!" well THATS THE STUPIDEST PERSON IN THE WORLD. owls are hard work and will probably die if a regular person took care of it. and then after a few months of owning the owl, "awww man this owl is soooo much work. i know! ill release it into the wild! and it will fly free! kabuhhh!" well THATS ALSO STUPID. if someone got a baby owl and then released it, it would die. cuz it wasnt raised an owl. it was raised the helpless pet of an idiot getting a bad diet and being kept in a tight cage. DONT KEEP AN OWL AS A PET!

An owlet typically eats small prey like insects, small rodents, and sometimes birds. They usually consume around 1/4 to 1/3 of their body weight in food per day, with feeding occurring every few hours, depending on the species and age of the owlet.

NEVER give a baby owl water to drink! Owls obtain liquids from the foods they consume.

It is illegal to keep an owl as a pet in the US.

In the US, all native migratory birds are protected under federal law (Migratory Bird Treaty Act), and owls are further protected by various state and Federal Laws. It is illegal to keep a protected bird unless you have the required permits, and these permits are never given for the purpose of keeping an owl as a pet. Some people who may be licensed to keep owls (but NOT as pets) are licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialists, certain ornithologists and wildlife biologists who demonstrate a need to have an owl for research or educational purposes, certain zoos, and some falconers.

The penalty for violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act includes fines of up to $500 and jail time of up to 6 months; for hawks, eagles and owls, the penalties can be much higher.

If you found a baby owl, you need to put it back where you found it, or get it to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist.

Baby birds fledge (leave the nest) several days before they start to fly. They hop around on the ground, and they climb on low branches until their wings are strong enough for them to fly. The parent birds continue to feed and care for the fledglings until they are self-sufficient. If you see a baby bird on the ground, and the bird has most of his feathers, leave him alone. Do not think that he needs to be "rescued."

If you see a baby bird on the ground, and the baby is naked or he has mostly fuzz, he is a nestling and is not ready to fledge out. Try to put him back in the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on him. It won't bother the mother. Birds do not have an acute sense of smell, and the parents will not detect your scent on the baby.

Wildlife biologists and bird-banders handle baby birds all the time - they are licensed to do so - and the parent birds never abandon their babies because of this.

If you can not get the nestling back into his own nest, hang a basket (like an Easter basket) on a tree limb as close to the nest as you can reach. Place paper towel in the bottom of the basket, and put some grass and leaves in with the baby bird. The parents find their babies by sound, not by sight or smell, so as long as they can hear the baby, they will come and feed him. Placing it on a high limb will keep cats and other predators from getting it, as they would if you left it on the ground.

If you find a baby bird on the ground, and it seem to have been injured by the fall - or if you find an injured adult bird - contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist.

Licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialists have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and they have the required state and federal licenses that allow them to keep the wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released.

Do not take the animal to a vet - vets are for pets, and most vets do not have the expertise to care for wild animals; nor do most vets have the proper licenses that would allow them to keep a recuperating wild animal.

Do not attempt to keep a wild bird and care for it yourself. Remember - in the US, all native migratory birds are protected under federal law (Migratory Bird Treaty Act), and it is illegal to keep any protected bird unless you have the required permits. Penalties for violating this law include fines of up to $500 and/or up to 6 months in jail for each offense.

While preparing an injured bird to go to the specialist in rehabilitation, place him in a small box lined with paper towel - not cloth, as the bird's nails could get caught in the material. Cover the box and place it in a warm, dark, quiet area. Do not allow any animals, children or excitable adults near it. Do not attempt to feed the bird - if you do not know what species it is, you don't know what to feed it (different species of owls eat different things), and an inexperienced person can kill a bird attempting to feed it. Do not attempt to give it any water - it could aspirate and die, and owls do not drink water. Get it to a specialist in rehabilitation as quickly as possible, within 4-6 hours if possible.

Owlets eat their food a little at a time. You would have to cut or break up little peaces of prey. An owlet craves alot of food a day. It really just depends on the kind of owlet it is.

About every 3-4 hours. Make sure the food you feed them is high in protein, and contains liquid like blood. Owls don't drink water they get fluids from the food they eat.
