The answer to this question depends!

How much to feed your rabbit depends on her (or his!) size and what foods you're feeding her.

What foods to feed your rabbit depends on her health, and lifestyle (activity levels, indoor/outdoor, etc).

You should talk to an experienced rabbit vet about this question. After they examine your bunny's health and ask about how your bunny lives, they can tell you how much to feed your bunny.

Most healthy adult pet rabbits should eat:

  • Hay: unlimited
  • Fresh greens: 20-50g/1kg rabbit weight
  • High quality rabbit pellets: 1-2 tbsp/1kg rabbit weight

Treats are optional. Treats can include a bite or two of fresh fruit or vegetables.

Rabbits shouldn't eat "people" food. They shouldn't eat nuts, seeds, processed grains (e.g. bread, cereal), sugars, candy, chocolate, dairy (including yogurt), or any animal fats or meat.

Hay: Unlimited

  • Most rabbits should only eat grass hay (e.g. timothy, fescue)
  • Legume grasses (e.g. clover, alfalfa/lucerne) are not healthy for most rabbits

Greens: 20-50g (0.5-1.25 packed cups) for each 1kg of rabbit weight

Not all plants/vegetables are good for rabbits. There are a lot of good websites (like House Rabbit Society) that can help you know which are safe and which aren't. Here is a short list of some healthy greens for rabbits:

  • carrot tops
  • herbs: cilantro, mint, dill, sage, basil, oregano, marjoram, fennel greens
  • dandelion
  • dark lettuce greens: Boston/bibb, green/red leaf, romaine, chicory/escarole/endive

Pellets: 1-2 tablespoons for each 1kg of rabbit weight

High-quality pellets are:

  • High fibre 20% minimum
  • Moderate protein 12-14%
  • Low fat 1-2%
  • Low calcium 0.5-1%

Treats: optional -- a few bites per day is okay

Stick to fresh fruits and vegetables, instead of pet store treats. Not all fruit/veg are good for rabbits. There are a lot of good websites (like House Rabbit Society) that can help you know which are safe and which aren't. Here is a short list of some safe treats for rabbits:

  • carrot
  • berries
  • apple
  • banana (very sugary -- just a bit!)
  • fennel bulb (one of my rabbit LOVES this -- after banana, it's his fave)
  • grape (very sugary -- just a bit!)

How much a rabbit eats per day depends on the size of the rabbit. Rabbits should be given a bowl of pellets and a couple of handfuls of veg, and plenty of hay and water (unlimited amounts). If you feed a healthy diet like this, you rabbit should not get overweight if you give them plenty of exercize. See the related link below for more info about a healthy rabbit diet (including portion sizes).

How many fruits should a rabbit eat in a day?

A rabbit should eat about one to two cups of fresh vegetables and a small amount of fruits daily to maintain a balanced diet. Fruits should be given as treats in moderation, with no more than 1-2 tablespoons per day to prevent gastrointestinal issues and obesity.

How many naps does a rabbit have in a day?

A rabbit will 'cat nap' all day long. They are nocturnal animals and will stay awake most of the night.

How many carrots can a rabbit eat in a day?

It depends on the rabbit's size and personality if he/she will eat it slowly or fast. Carrots are high in sugars and starches and should be limited in a rabbit's diet as a treat food. Carrot greens are excellent and can be included in the rotation of daily "salad" greens, but carrot itself should be limited: The House Rabbit Society recommends no more than 2 tablespoons per day of treat food (including carrot) for a normal, healthy 6 pound rabbit. See the related questions below for more info and helpful links.

Who can care for your rabbit when you are away?

You can ask a trusted friend, family member, or neighbor who is familiar with rabbits to care for your rabbit when you are away. Alternatively, you can also hire a professional pet sitter experienced with rabbits or board your rabbit at a reputable rabbit boarding facility.

How many times a day should i feed my rabbit pellets and what times are best Also should i just let it have unlimited hay and a few vegetables here and there?

Just once a day, but leave the food in all day and night. Give it about 1 tablespoon of feed per pound that your rabbit weighs. Unlimmeted hay is good, and just a little bit of fruit or vegetables once a day. Make sure not to give your rabbit iceberg lettuce. Berries, celery, kale and parsley and other lettuces are ok. Also, small pieces of apple or pineapple are ok.
