Male and female mallards form pairs in the Autumn. In the late autumn, or early spring, the female will nest in a small hollow, often under vegetation by a source of water. The female will lay up to 8-12 eggs, laying one egg a day. She then sits on the eggs for up to 28 days. The ducklings hatch within hours of each other, and once they have rested and dried off, are ready to follow the mother as a group. The male mallard often remains nearby, holding territory. Ducklings remain with their mother for up to 12 weeks. At this age they are fully fledged and ready to fly. Mallards can nest more than once in a spring/summer season. They live up to 5 to 10 years.

In general, both the male and female have a dark blue speculum that's bordered by white, and they both have orange feet.

The male mallard has a glossy green head with a white 'necklace' at the base of its neck. Its chest is chestnut in colour and it has grey body plumage. Its tail is black and curls upward and it has a yellow bill.

The female is mottled brown overall and has an orange bill that is splattered with black.
