Sloths are mainly preyed upon by large birds of prey, such as harpy eagles and jaguars. Additionally, snakes and wild cats may also prey on sloths if the opportunity arises.
The scent made by the prey would trick the predator into thinking that the prey isn't there, so if the prey "isn't there" the predator can't attack it. :)
