there is a great variation in lizard sizes. the biggest lizard is a komodo dragon, they can get up to 9.8 feet but are illegal to keep as pets unless you have a zoo license (because they are carnivorous, have toxic saliva and have been known to eat people). the smallest lizard is a Sphaerodactylus Ariasae, it is about 3/4 of an inch and can curl up on a dime. they are probably really hard to get a hold of if not imposable. a medium sized lizard that i really recommend for beginners is a bearded dragon. they get about 2.5 feet and are relatively easy to take care of.
