Hang hummingbird feeders around 5-6 feet off the ground. This height allows you to easily observe the birds and refill the feeders while keeping them out of reach of predators. Also, make sure the feeders are placed in a shady area to prevent the nectar from spoiling quickly.

It depends on where you live. Hummingbirds are flower feeders and consequently tend to migrate when flowers will be in bloom. So feeders should be put out in spring when flowers start blooming and should be kept out until the first frost. Its also important to change the liquid in feeders every week since it will begin to ferment.
They will feed when they return return from their migration. They will return in the spring as soon as the flowers bloom. Putting out a sugar water feeder should help attract them when they return.

We are right up the road in Danville, AL and we have been putting up feeders for about 20 yrs and have a pretty good population. We've been finding that in the past few yrs we have to have the feeders up by the end of the 2nd week of March for the first few stragglers that come in. The first ones don't always stay but they lead the march.
If too warm/hot the hummingbird will not feed.
