No, you cannot hatch eggs from a supermarket because the eggs sold in supermarkets are not fertilized, so they do not contain embryos that can develop into chicks. Hatching requires fertilized eggs that have been incubated under specific conditions to allow the chick to develop and hatch.

Only if the egg is fertile. With most store bought eggs, the hens aren't in contact with a rooster, so their eggs aren't fertile. Some people HAVE hatched eggs from the supermarket, but they are most likely from organic or free-range chickens that do have access to a rooster.

You can usually tell if an egg is fertile by cracking one open (this one will be useless for hatching of course). Inside, there is a tiny white speck: when the egg is fertile, the speck is almost perfectly round and looks much like a bullseye.

I think your best bet is to buy from a local farmer's market, and ask the seller if they're fertile eggs, or buy fertile eggs from a hatchery.

Good luck! :)

No. They aren't fertilized. Do you eat baby chicks? You are from the city aren't you?..

No, because, even if the embryo was still alive, the cold of the fridge at the store would kill it.

Can the eggs bought at the supermarket ever hatch into chick?

No. Most supermarket eggs are unfertilized and if they are free range and fertilized, they probably have been cold for too long for the embryo to have survived. This said, it is always possible that some mistake is made and a viable egg gets through.

Why does a hen sit on her egg?

For the chicks in the eggs to develop and hatch properly, the eggs must be kept warm. The chicken's body heat keeps them warm. If the eggs are taken away from the hen and still meant to hatch, they are kept in an incubator to maintain the right temperature. If they aren't meant to hatch, the are refrigerated. This stops the development of the chick. Supermarket eggs aren't usually fertilized so there isn't a chick to develop, but they are still refrigerated to keep them fresh.
