I would go against the sand very strongly. Bunnies like to hop and because of this the sand could easily be kicked up. It would get in their eyes and nose causing infections. Keep with the pet store bedding - it's made for a reason.

yes, guinea pigs can have sand in there cage, however it has to be non clumping,(like some cat litter). And make sure the sand is Fairly fine, as it can get lodged in and behind there eyes if not. I would recommend not putting sand in the cage but, some guinea pigs like it as it can be very cooling in summer. or in hot weather.

Should you get a small cage for your guinea pig or a big cage?

You should get a big cage for your guinea pig. Guinea pigs need ample space to move around, explore, exercise, and feel comfortable. A larger cage will also allow for the addition of hideouts, toys, and other enriching items to keep your guinea pig happy and healthy.

Can chicken wire be a guinea pig cage?

Opinion 1: No, it is nor okay. They can severely damage their feet and can cause a painful infection. Get a cage with no wire floor.Opinion 2:There is absolutely no problem with having a guinea pig cage with a wire floor. Having bred guinea-pigs for a great many years, I can assure you that never once did any of our guinea-pigs suffer any damage at all to their feet as a result of a wire cage.Wire floor cages are necessary in warmer parts of the world where the guinea-pigs spend all their time utdoors. this way, they can still get to the grass underneath the cage, and engage in their natural behaviour, which is to graze. If your guinea poig cage does not have a wire floor, or some other way for the guinea pig to get to the grass, you are depriving it of something which is instinctive. If your guinea pig is a completely indoors guinea pig (which is unnatural in itself), the floor of its cage must be wood or some other sturdy material with no gaps. Wire floor cages are only good if the cage sits flat on the ground.

Do the guinea pigs need to be in their own cage when pregnant?
