The Giver suffered because he was burdened with the memories of the past, both good and bad, that caused him emotional pain and isolation from others. His role in society as the Receiver of Memory meant he had to bear the weight of these experiences alone, without being able to share them with others.
The Giver transmits memories, some bad some good, to Jonas. He prepares him for his assignment which is, The Receiver. The receiver receives all the bad memories from the town so the town is not sad. "It is better for one to suffer than all to suffer", The Giver.

Well they are meant to work obviously but sometimes people use a "Giver Kit" and sometimes when they make that giver using the kit they make a mistake in editing the script. Or the giver in a game gets over used which confuses me but 75% of the time it involves the scripting of the giver or someone made a giver from the kit!
The whole idea of a Giver is someone that is kind of required to suffer for the protection of others. In a really creepy way, given, but that's the idea. You hold the "bad" memories and associations for others, without anyone to talk to about them, and you are the only one, so you are indispensable.
Because in that utopian society they have made animals obsolete. No one but Jonas and the Giver have seen an elephant.

The memory that made Gabe fall asleep in "The Giver" was a memory of riding on a sled down a snowy hill. This memory was transmitted to him by Jonas as they both shared the memory during their escape from the community.
