Largely because it was in CS Lewis mind to write in the form of an allegory. This is a poetic form where the meaning is implied rather than direct. The use of the lion image is a biblical but not very common symbol for Jesus, and refers to the Lion of Judah and the lion in the book of revelation chapter five.

Aslan, the lion in The Chronicles of Narnia, is often interpreted as a metaphor for Jesus due to his sacrificial death and resurrection, redemption of sinners, and portrayal as a powerful and compassionate leader. Through Aslan's character, author C.S. Lewis conveys themes of sacrifice, redemption, and divine love reminiscent of Jesus in Christian theology.

Some see Aslan the lion as the Messiah because he "is on the move to take control of Narnia from the White Witch." Aslan saves Narnia like how Jesus Christ saved mankind. Aslan also sacrifices himself as Jesus did on the cross. Aslan is also humiliated and shaved like Jesus was when he was taunted and lashed on the cross. Aslan also resurrected in the morning like Jesus did. The White Which is a metaphor for the devil. The children of Narnia are the children of Adam and Eve.

A lion is a good metaphor for Jesus, because a lion is considered one of the most powerful animals. It is fierce and powerful, but simply beautiful animal.
