Bella, as a human wasn't effected by vampire powers that worked on the mind like Edward's, Aro's or Jane's. This was intensified when she changed into a vampire. She can now push her protective shield around other near her to protect them to. When Edward is inside of Bella's protective bubble he can read her mind.
