There is an allusion to Christ through Simon. He is pure and innocent trying to create peace

There is an allusion to the devil through the flies. When ever there are flies present there is true evil. Flies are an allusion to the devil throughout literature and films. This allusion is the reasoning behind the title of the book.

"Lord of the Flies" contains several allusions, such as to the biblical character of Simon representing Christ-like figure, the conch shell symbolizing democracy, and the island itself reflecting the Garden of Eden. The character of Jack alludes to Dictatorship and savagery, while the signal fire symbolizes hope and civilization. The plot alludes to the breakdown of societal norms and the darkness of human nature.

some important quotes from Lord of the Flies are: "He tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up" ---the meaning is Jack is obsessed with hunting and is slowing becoming a civilized bully to a savage killer. "Which is better... to have laws and agree, or to hunt and kill?"--the meaning is when the boys choose to hunt they are no longer civiled as they claim to be. "Maybe there is a beast... maybe it's only us"--the meaning is there is a beast inside of humanity. "We've got to have rules and obey them. After all we're not savages. We're English, the English are best at everything"--the meaning is that even the most civilized nation can be savages...there is a fine line between civility and savagery. pg. 50 "Simon found the fruit for they could not reach." This is and allusion to Simon because he is like a Christ figure, giving the littluns fruit like in The Bible.

pg. 30 " It's was like in the book" At once there was a clamor. "Treasure Island" "Shallows and Amazons" "Coral Island" This is when they are comparing it to different book.

pg.128 "The pile of guts was a black blob of flies that buzzed like a saw" This is the lord of the flies and a reference to the devil.

pg.82 "What i mean is... what if it is only us?" Simon realizes that the beast is within them, we realize that whatever we do we can not stop violence.

R.M. Ballantyne: The Coral Island - the names "Ralph," "Jack," and "Simon" (2.59; 12.247) - The Coral Island was a classic 1857 "Europe can better the world through conquering it and forcing Christianity upon everyone" book. Golding read it when he was a wee boy, considered it racist, and fashioned Lord of the Flies so that it would function as a "screw you" to Ballantyne. While the boys in The Coral Island encounter evil "primitives" (read: natives) and find a happy ending by burning "the false Gods" of the inhabitants, the boys in Lord of the Flies, the whiteboys, realize that they are evil themselves. Golding argues that darkness is internal and inherent, not something you can attribute solely to those with a different skin color than you.

The Bible - the name "Simon"

Robert Louis Stevenson: Treasure Island (2.57)

Arthur Ransome: Swallows and Amazons (2.58)
