In late 2009, Thunder Basin Coal Company purchased the adjoining Jacobs Ranch Mine from Rio Tinto Energy America, and combined the two facilities. Jacobs Ranch Mine produced 38.7 million short tons in 2009, and the projected tonnage for 2010 for the new combined Black Thunder Mine is 120 million short tons. The second largest coal mine in the world is the neighboring North Antelope Rochelle Mine, owned by Powder River Coal Company, which in 2009 produced 98.6 million short tons. Projected production for 2010 for NARM is 100 million short tons. Northeastern Wyoming produces more coal than any other region in the world.
