Haiti at it's time had one of the harshest slave system known to man. Because the slave population outnumbered their masters, they introduced harsh measures that can not be told in polite societies. Like with anywhere in the world, with oppression comes rebellion, the human desire to survive and be free will cannot be oppressed for so long without a desire to be free. Thus Haiti desired independence and fought valiantly against a better equipped French army and still won.
