Why are there so many different calendars in the world?

Because there are many different people and cultures in the world. Just like different countries can have different languages or traditions, they can have other different things, including calendars. Many are based on religion and so they measure from different points in time that are significant in that religion.

They thought the world was a flat disc, and they thought the world had an edge you sailed off of. So when they discoverd america it seamed like a new world because the thought nothing was there before, just water. So it seamed like a different world.
