Answer #2The alcohol people can drink, the so-called Ethanole (EtOH) is a fermentation product... it's not really possible to say when people first discovered that. Archaeologists suggest a date around 5'900 B.C. in Mesopotamia (near today's Iran, Iraq). At this point the researchers guess that wild yeast brought up the idea (doing fermentation) to produce beer... other sources would probably say the Egyptians were in first place to find that... the fermentation of a bunch of grapes apparently was discovered later on... as Greece and the ancient Rome relied on that kind of drink (always diluted with water).

PS: Never ever try to produce Ethanole on your own... the byproduct Methanole (MeOH) is flavorless, but can make you become blind!
