A strong contender comes very early in the war with the first battle of The Marne in early September 1914.

The German defeat at the Marne extinguished any hopes of succesfully executing the modified Schlieffen Plan and thus knocking France out of the war quickly before turning East to face the Russians.

There after ensued a series of failed flanking manoeuvres by both sides known as "The race to the sea" which resulted in both sides being entrenched from the Swiss border to the English channel in a deadly stalemate which was to last until the final weeks of the war some 4 years later.

Having failed to achieve a quick victory in the West the odds from this point forward were always stacked against the Triple Alliance due to the greater resources and manpower of the Triple Entente and the eventual entry into the war of the USA on the entente side
