Louis XVI inherited a lot of long term debt when he became King and he made the matter worse by supporting the American Revolution. The existing tax code which included tax free status for the Clergy and Nobles must share a part of the blame.

1. The national debt was really high. There are many reasons for this. Louis XIV waged many wars including the War of Spanish Succession, but failed to win any of these wars, which led to major losses. Louis XV financed the French and Indian War, which was also a failure. Louis XVI financed French support of the American Revolution through loans, but this led to massive debt. The popular economics minister, Jacques Necker, attempted to alleviate the problem by taking loans and forgoing taxes (which made him popular). However, this only increased the debt.

2. The price of bread: The price of bread rose (inflation). Bread was a staple for the majority of the French population. Peasants and lower class members were becoming more frustrated as the aristocrats and the monarchy were showing a nonchalant, "let them have cake" attitude.
