Possibly, the utility of the wheelbarrow notwithstanding, it caused those who used one to think 'outside the box' when applying simple and complex machines to solving problems. I'm going out on a limb here, but I'd venture to say that the hydraulic pallet jack was probably inspired by the wheelbarrow.
