alliances is the most important long term reason
The European countries involved in World War I had long standing alliances and treaties, through familial and diplomatic relations. Once the Austro-Hungarian empire fired on Serbia, all the alliances were called in, causing more and more countries to enter into the war.
They were very important. The whole reason the war occurred was due to their policies. In the quest for empire, European nations formed alliances. The combination of these alliances, and the mishandling of them by the European statesmen caused the war to start, and drag on despite the obvious stalemate and mass slaughter.
The most important influence in setting the stage for World War I was militarism and alliances. When building a military and keeping it strong, became a sign that the country was ready to fight. When the other countries were on edge. Other nations were pulled into the war by alliances and they didn't need to be involved.
It was one of the 4 major reasons of war, the other three are Alliances, Militarism, Nationalism.
