Out on the tundra, during the winter season (most of the year) there's pretty much just snow, snow, and more snow. There are no trees, bushes or other materials to build a house from, so the Inuit invented igloos. They invented them because they were resourceful (not so much that they had a choice).

only ice could be used as building material near the north and south poles, so people who live there uses ice to build houses
