You may follow one of the following methods to stop your Garden Pond form freezing.
* Add Ba(OH)2 in some calculated amount to the water. These are proved to have been effective freezing point reduction additives. This will save the water form freezing but I dont know what side effects does it have for the creatures in the water. If you have dozen gold fishes down there then they might leave you for ever. * It is also a fact that still water freezes faster. so You can install a wave generator in the pond. It will delay the freezing and make it enjoyable for the bathers. * Put two alligators in the pond. If they are a couple then better. they will create the required motion to keep the water form freezing. * Get a dozen water heaters and put them in the pond. Yeah they should be plugged in and working. * Seal the Water Surface with a non conducting material. It should be thick enough to keep the cold out and the heat in.
Aquatic life is possible in a frozen pond because only the top of the pond is frozen. The fish live down at the pond bottom, where it is warmer than the top.

In extreme freezing conditions, a shallow pond may freeze down to the bottom. If the pond is at least 18 inches deep, the surface may freeze down to a couple of inches.
