Samuel Colt manufactured his first revolvers in 1837. There were earlier revolving firearms, called 'peperboxes', which had multiple barrels that revolved around a central axis, but Colt figured out how to connect multiple chambers to a single barrel and automatically advance a new chamber each time the hammer was cocked. Colt refused to make a double-action revolver that could be fired without first cocking the hammer.
