There is no ONE best gun for everything. One gun may be a great deer rifle, but it is very hard to duck hunt with a rifle, or carry it on your belt for self defense. Another may be a great assault rifle, but pretty useless at 900 meters.
I agree with the original poster- I think of guns like I do Golf clubs. You select a golf club for what it can do- same thing with a gun. For short range work- less than 25ish meters- I prefer a pistol in a useable caliber (.380 to 45 ACP). For a bit longer work a shotgun- pump, 12 gauge, holding 6 to 12 shells- from 25ish yards up to about 75. From 50ish yards to 350/500 yards or so I prefer a mid caliber bullet- 7.62 by 39mm, or 5.56mm NATO. For longer range work (up to 1000 yards) or larger game (Elk, Moose, Griz Bear) at closer ranges, I prefer the 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester with a 168 grain bullet.
Like golf clubs, where I'm shooting determines what I'll shoot with.

The AK-47 is the most lethal gun because you can learn how to use it in one hour or less. It is also the most produced weapon in the world.
