I use 6mm for 6mm, but if you don't have a metric set, 1/4 inch is only very slightly bigger.
That size is 8-32. The drill bit for a clearance hole is 11/64, or a #17 drill bit.
Drill bits are not universal. You choose the size of the drill bit according to the size of hole you like to make.
For a clearance hole you need a 9/64 drill bit.
A 'unibit is a 'stepped steel drill bit that can drill any size of hole in softer materials.
If no drill bit this size available, can use EDM service if metal is used
I use a 3/16 drill bit for that.
You use a 0.875 bit or a 7/8 bit . They are the same size.
If you are hoping to insert a 5mm anchor, the hole must be close. I would drill a 5mm hole.

That depends on the size of the finish hole. It should be big enough so that the larger bit will grab in the hole and not skate off.
A 40mm hole saw is more efficient than a drill bit for holes of this size.
