Ammo for Mossberg 500 Mariner?

The barrel will be marked with the ammunition it uses. A 500A is a 12 gauge and can use any factory made ammunition that's up to 3" long. That includes all 12ga birdshot shells either 2 3/4" or 3", all 12ga buckshot shells, and all 12ga slugs of the same lengths.

Can you use steel shot in a lead barrel?

Assuming you mean a barrel that is for lead pellets, if the barrel is not rifled, steel shot will not damage the smooth barrel. If it is rifled however, steel shot will in fact damage the rifling.

Although they weren't as accurate, smoothbore "muskets" were easier, faster to reload than a rifled barrel. Less constriction in the barrel without rifling.

What type of rifling does Remington use?

Remington uses "hammer forged" rifled barrels on all production rifles. Their custom shop uses mostly "button rifled" barrels unless the customer specifies a barrel made by a custom barrel maker who uses the "cut-rifled" process to install rifling into a barrel blank.

Will it harm a rifled barrel to fire buckshot through it?

I have no personal experience with this. What follows is information from a reputable local gun dealer. Rifled barrels are designed primarily for use with sabot slugs. Buckshot will not harm a rifled barrel because in the barrel, the plastic wadding holding the shot together will be the only portion of the projectile(s) in contact with the barrel. Firing rifled lead slugs will lead to difficult (nearly impossible) to clean out accumulations of lead in the barrel & negate the rifling because the rifling of the slug & the rifling of the barrel will not match up.

Can a 12 gauge Glenfield Model 778 shotgun be fitted with a slug barrel?

Answer the glenfield by marlin is compatible with marlin 120 12ga barrels are available for the 120 the only difference is the stocks wich are also interchangable the 120 is higher quality I love my glenfieldThat model is obsolete and you are not going to find a slug barrel. If you must use slugs, you can have the existing barrel modified to accept interchangeable choke tubes and use a rifled tube when shooting slugs.
