With firearms, the primer is struck by a spring loaded part of the gun, crushing the primer, which explodes, sending a jet of flame inside the cartridge case. This case holds gunpowder, which burns very rapidly, producing hot, expanding gasses. Those gasses blow the bullet out of the barrel of the gun.
