The 87D model is pretty hard to find ,also parts for it seem to be hard to find and expensive when you do,its an excellent shooting gun, very accurate and just plain fun to shoot ,easy to clean and very well made,Stevens arms company went out of business at least the one that produced the original nice guns and now someone has bought the name and is not standing behind any of the guns made before a certain date ,just the ones they are produceing now,so basicaly you have no warrenty of any kind on the older guns or a parts supply,I buy parts for my gun when i can find them, some other models of the 87 are interchangeable on some parts but you have to research which ones.As for value I do believe it is climbing and would say you can get one if you can find one for about $150.00 give or take a few dollars considering condition, these guns were sold for about 40 bucks or so when new.
50-100 USD

The Stevens model 87 was made from 1938-1982,with a total production of 1,800,000 made during this time span.

updated answer: Stevens was owned by Savage Arms, and the Stevens model 87D is the same as the Savage model 6D (Stevens rifles were the lower cost siblings to the similar Savage models, usually with birch rather than walnut stocks, etc). The cast aluminum alloy trigger guard used by both versions of this rifle are still available (in Jan 2012) from Numrich (aka Gun Parts Corp) -- see: www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=856 orignal answer: Try e-gunparts.com
I can say that the Savage/Stevens model 87 was made from 1938-1980,s.the original model 87 was made from 1938-1945 in the amount of 200,000 rifles.I am not sure of when the model 87D variant was made however.
In very good condition, these guns sell from $70-$120. A lot of people like the fact that its all steel and walnut. We make new firing pins (part #76-77) for this model. sales@countrygunsmith.net
The rifle will shoot .22lr .22 short, and .22 long. Only .22lr will cycle the action and load the next round. .22 Short and long will function as bolt action only.
AS OF NOVEMBER 7, 2007 I WILL BE THE ONLY OWNER OF A STEVENS MOD. 87D THAT I RECEIVED FOR MY 13th BIRTHDAY. THE GUN WAS PURCHACED NEW IN 1957 BY MY FATHER AT A LOCAL HARDWARE IN ROANOKE VA. THEREFORE THE ANSWER IS " AT LEAST 50 YEARS " SINCE THE FIRST 87D WAS MADE.
Savage Arms made the Western Field model SD59A. Essentially the same rifle as the Savage model 6, 6a, etc. They were a semiautomatic .22lr rifle that was also made under the Stevens brand name as the model 87a, 87d, etc. They are fine rifles that fire from the open bolt position. Kind of hard to work on though, so some gunsmiths don't like them. They have a single shot feature which could feasibly help with accuracy in some situations. Stick with .22lr and not longs or shorts to effectively cycle the action. Made from about 1938 until the 1960's I think. I have found mine to be as accurate as newer model name brand rifles.
To remove the magazine tube on the Stevens 87D, first ensure the firearm is unloaded. Then, unscrew the end cap at the front of the magazine tube. Slide off the end cap and follower, then push the magazine spring and follower out through the rear of the tube. Finally, slide the magazine tube out of the receiver.
