No one best, since there is a broad variety of people. The best firearm will be (a) a gun that is 100% reliable, and the (b) that THAT person shoots well. The best way to pick one may be to find a firing range that rents a variety of firearms for use on that range, and try several to see what works best for you. It should be a good quality firearm from one of the reputable makers, and should be of adequate power to serve as a defensive firearm (many people suggest .380 or larger for defense). My personal choice is a bit "old school"- a Smith & Wesson Model 60 double action revolver- but that may not be the right sidearm for you.
