Several things happen, very quickly. If you are asking about the process- pulling the trigger releases a hammer, which is driven forward by a spring. It strikes the firing pin, pushing it against the primer. The primer is a very small metal cup containing a small explosive charge. It explodes from being struck, and sends a spurt of flame into the cartridge casing, which holds gunpowder that is ignited by the flame. The burning gunpowder gives off a hot, rapidly expanding gas. That expanding gas pushes the projectile out of the barrel. At the same time the projectile is being forced away from you, the gun is also being pushed back to you. This is called recoil or kick.
