The "Springfield Automatic Shotgun" is a clone of the Browning A5 produced by Savage/Springfield.
The Browning A5 is credited as being the first semi automatic shotgun design ever produced. It is a recoil operated, tube magazine fed gun with a reciprocating barrel. It has a 5 round capacity, one in the chamber and 4 in the magazine.
Recoil is managed and harnessed by a system of friction rings and spring that can be set up in different configurations to maximize operation with different powered loads.
I can tell you the Springfield name was discontinued in 1948. Value would be from around 250.00-350.00 assuming it's in very good to excellent shape.
Assuming 12ga, $150-$250. sales@countrygunsmith.net
Manufactured by Stevens Arms, 1931-1941. Montgomery Wards. Hercules was just their name for this model.
Contrary to what some believe, Springfield Arms was never a subsidary company of Cresent Arms. Springfeild Arms, like Cresent Arms, were both bought out by Stevens/Savage. Unlike the Cresent, Springfield manufacturing continued after the buy out. Some clarification: Springfield Arms Co was absorbed by Stevens very early, before 1900. Stevens continued to use the Springfield name on certain models of shotgun. Savage absorbed Stevens around 1930 or so, and continued to use the Springfield name on into the 1980's, generally on guns sold to mass-marketers. Crescent Firearms was originally an independent manufacturer that was bought by the major wholesale HD Folsom, which also eventually was absorbed by Savage.

Model 720, probably, which was very similar to the Browning A5. There was also a Model 726 (2-shot version), 740 (Cutts compensator and skeet style stock) and 745 (alloy receiver). Look for the model number on the receiver of your gun. Made from 1931-1949, although your barrel address markings indicate pre-1947. sales@countrygunsmith.net
