No- the 7x57 was developed separately, in 1892 by Paul Mauser. The 8mm Mauser (actually the 7.92 Mauser, but every calls it the 8mm) was developed by a government board.

The 8mm Mauser is a good black bear round. American 8mm is kind of underpowered but with handloading or European ammo its in the same class as 30-06..
i have a very old mauser which is not an 8mm, i have alot of those. i is markerd berlin and ser number 1909. i can not find a marking of what cal it may be but a 8mm will almost fit but not close. can you help me find the cal. maybe 7mm ( how hard to find that?) mikkel.mikkelson@comcast.com
